In A Flash – Paid and Job-Protected Leave for Employee COVID-19 vaccinations

April 23, 2021

From our partners at Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark LLP:

Alberta Government announced a new paid and job-protected COVID-19 vaccination leave, effective April 21, 2021. The leave is meant to support Alberta workers in being vaccinated, as well as encourage further vaccination across the province, and act as a step toward re-opening Alberta’s economy as the pandemic continues. Employers should consider communications to employees regarding the leave, and adjust to its operational and economic impacts.

In this article, we summarize the key elements of the new legislation and outline important considerations for employers. We also suggest how best to use this opportunity to communicate with employees on the new benefit, its effect, and the importance of continuing to be vigilant in following COVID-19 rules like mask wearing, physical distancing, and frequent handwashing, among other risk mitigation measures.
