RELEASE: Merit Benefits launches Mental Health Initiative to Support Skilled Trades and their Families

EDMONTON, AB (May 3, 2021) – The past 14 months have had a tremendous impact on the physical and mental health of members of Merit Contractors Association and Merit National. By putting mental health under the microscope, Merit understands members, employees, and their families can benefit from hands-on tools that can help start the conversation on mental health.

“It’s critical for company leaders to not only recognize how mental health impacts their workplace, but they need to know what they can do to help employees, and their families, cope with the increased stresses we are experiencing,” said Malcolm D. Kirkland, President and Chief Executive Officer of Merit. “With the introduction of our mental health initiative we provide our members with the tools to help start the conversation – at work and at home.”

An important piece of this initiative is the introduction of the Merit Mental Health First Aid Kit. This engaging, high-profile piece provides members with quick and tangible access to information about mental health resources — from daily exercises and ways to maintain one’s mental health, to contact information for more urgent care. It will also serve as a place members and employees can store their own mental health information in the case of an emergency. By reimagining a health/safety product that most people are familiar with, it makes the topic of mental health much more approachable.

“Beyond Merit’s Mental Health First Aid Kit, in partnership with LifeWorks by Morneau Shepell, we launched the LifeWorks smartphone app in January to all employees active in the Merit benefit plan. Additionally, Merit’s College of Construction offers a variety of online, take at your own pace, courses tailored to address mental health in the workplace and at home, continued Kirkland. “We are providing our members, their employees and families with the tools to help with all aspects of their mental health. Together, we will ensure no member, or family member is left behind.”
